Designing better mental healthcare facilities

A complex engineering project at Chester CAMHS unit

Steven Hunt describes his company’s specialist design and provision of a comprehensive ‘package’ of building engineering services for a new CAMHS inpatient in Chester.

The remit of the National Health Service (NHS) specialist CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services) team is diverse, and its role is increasingly significant in assessing and addressing the emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs of young people up to the age of 19.

CAMHS teams are focused on guiding and supporting young people and their families through the process of diagnosis and treatment for behavioural conditions such as ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and a full range of mental health conditions and psychological problems. While most of these services are provided on an outpatient basis, and delivered in close co-operation with other professionals including schools and social services, there is also a need for specialist provision for young people with more severe mental health service needs.
