Designing better mental healthcare facilities

Creating more peaceful spaces

Safehinge has unveiled a ‘ground-breaking’ new acoustic threshold seal designed to create more peaceful environments and ensure privacy and safety for patients in psychiatric facilities.

Reportedly the only such product specially designed for mental healthcare facilities, SUREsound was developed in direct response to architects’ requests for an anti-tamper, antiligature door threshold seal installable on antibarricade and double-acting doors. With SUREsound (patent pending), the rubber seals are divided into small sections before being fitted from the top into an extruded carrier. Once in place, they are clamped securely with antitamper screws, ‘making it impossible for the seal to be removed’.

Safehinge said: “With an acoustic rating of 32 Rw dB, and fully fire rated, the concealed units will help dampen noise from within the room, meaning important consultations can be carried out with the patient in a familiar environment, reducing anxiety, and producing better outcomes.”

Director, Philip Ross, added: “Hotels spend considerable time and money on acoustics, and it’s an interesting parallel to mental health environments – where people are co-habiting whether they like it or not, making acoustics extremely important.”

The standard unit is supplied in 800 mm lengths for door leaf widths up to 1,000 mm, with larger lengths available on request.
