‘We live in a world where light dictates much of our biological function, so the ability to harness its power for human benefit is an extraordinary advancement,’ says director of Lighting at Light Years Ahead, Lee McCarthy. As he explains here, the lighting company works in partnership with Versalux – an Australian lighting business that has developed what is described as ‘cutting-edge’ Melagen technology, which ‘fine-tunes’ how light interacts with our circadian rhythms.
Melagen technology can enhance alertness, and reduce the likelihood of fatigue-related accidents, as well as boost workplace productivity. It can even support mental wellbeing — simply by managing specific light frequencies. It's an innovation which is proving transformative in both the workplace and in healthcare environments, offering a sophisticated yet practical solution to the challenges presented by artificial lighting on our health and wellbeing.
Melatonin, often called the sleep hormone, is a key component of the body's natural sleep-wake cycle. Secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness, it signals to the body that it is time for rest. However, modern lifestyles — with our prolonged exposure to artificial lighting, including late-night screen usage and irregular work shifts, have disrupted natural melatonin production. This disruption leads to sleep disorders and numerous associated health problems. By having the means to influence light exposure through Melagen technology, it is possible to improve overall wellbeing by optimising melatonin production, which encourages healthier sleep patterns.
The benefits of melatonin regulation are well-documented. A properly functioning sleep-wake cycle supports cognitive function, along with emotional wellbeing and stronger immune systems. By contrast, disruptions in melatonin secretion can be linked to increased risks of depression, anxiety, and various metabolic disorders. Utilising Melagen technology provides a way of restoring balance to the circadian rhythm, ensuring that individuals receive the right light at the right time for optimal health.
