WHAT WE DO
Safehinge Primera develop best in class doorsets and door components that improve people’s lives and keep staff and service users safer. We have more than 10 years’ experience designing, prototyping, testing, manufacturing and delivering award-winning products.
Working closely with the Mental Health community for so many years has given us a thorough understanding of the requirements – and we know the significant contribution that good design makes to the smooth running of care facilities and the recovery of service users. That’s why we take an active part in creating better Mental Health recovery environments through our role on the Board of the Design in Mental Health Network.
Our complete range of Symphony doorsets for Mental Health have been developed based on feedback from clinicians, architects, and estate and capital teams. Designed to create an inclusive environment that aids recovery, without compromising on safety or robustness.
Our en-suite door was awarded Product Innovation of the Year at DIMHN 2017 – commended as “lifesaving” by the judges. It has no known ligature points and retrofits in 60-minutes.
While our anti-barricade doorset offers the fastest anti-barricade access in Mental Health, providing reliable emergency access in just 2 seconds.
Anti-ligature locksets and handles
We’re the market leader for anti-ligature locksets and handles – which are used by more than 80% of NHS care providers, plus numerous private providers and residential care homes across the UK.
Our 5-way SOS (Staff Override System) lockset is the only anti-ligature lockset that ensure staff can always gain access. The staff key dominates the internal turn/pull – ending most barricades quickly and safely – and there’s four additional override methods for rare worst-case scenarios.

Brunswick Ward, Mersey Care NHS Trust
When Mersey Care upgraded their existing leaf-and-a half bedroom door arrangements, they wanted to improve the anti-barricade access and robustness of their doors – while still having a clear opening width of 1000mm. They found the leaf-and-a-half arrangement wasn’t ideal because fitting them with anti-barricade access created a very bulky meeting stile on the two door leaves. Plus these doors can look very institutional, with additional exposed metalwork you’d never expect to see on a door at home.
To address this, we proposed an extra-wide single leaf Symphony doorset which, because of its rapid-installation frame, allowed the installers to remove and replace the doorsets in under four hours, including fitting a wall in-fill section.
Atherleigh Park, North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
AFL Architects wanted design consistency across the separate psychiatric intensive care unit and adult inpatient rehabilitation wards in this new Mental Health facility, in Leigh, Wigan. We were there to offer the perfect solution with our 5-way SOS (Staff Override System) electronic locksets. This offered superior safety for staff, with the override methods ensuring staff can always gain access in an emergency. And it met the trust's requirements of promoting service user independence and restoring dignity, by offering service users control over their own living space by issuing a harmless key fob.
